How much space do you need for a jumping castle? A Gold Coast backyard guide

There is a moment every party plan reaches where you walk out the back door, stand on the grass with a cup of tea, and try to picture a jumping castle sitting there. You look at the clothesline. You look at the garden bed you meant to tidy. You wonder whether the whole thing will fit, or whether you should have booked a hall.

Good news. Most Gold Coast backyards fit a jumping castle comfortably, and the ones that look tight from the back step usually have more usable space than you think. We set up in Nerang courtyards, Pacific Pines lawns, Coomera side yards and Tweed Heads acreage, and there is a setup for almost every yard.

Here is exactly what we need, in real metres, so you can grab a tape measure and know before you book.

The real jumping castle measurements, in plain numbers

Our three full size white castles all sit on the same footprint. They are 6 metres long, 4 metres wide and 3.6 metres high. That is the inflatable itself. We also ask for roughly half a metre of clear space around the sides and back, so the anchor points and blower have somewhere to live, and a little more at the front where the kids climb on and off.

In practice, a flat area of about 7 metres by 5 metres gives us everything we need with room to spare. If your yard is closer to 6.5 by 4.5 we can usually still make it work, we just talk it through first.

The Bouncy Bubble Igloo is our compact option. The dome is 3 metres, plus a 1.5 metre walkway, so the footprint is about 4.5 metres by 3 metres. That fits in spaces where a full size jumping castle simply will not, and it is a genuinely beautiful setup rather than a consolation prize. Courtyards, townhouse lawns and smaller Southport yards love it.

Height matters as much as floor space, and it is the one people forget. The full size castles need 3.6 metres of clear air, so look up before you look down. Low branches, a shade sail, a pergola edge or a line running across the yard are the usual things to check. If a branch is in the way and you would rather not trim it, that is often the moment the Igloo becomes the better pick, or we simply shift the castle a few metres across the lawn.

Which of our four setups suits your space

The jumping castle with slide is $440 and it is the classic choice. Same 6 by 4 footprint, with the slide built into the length, so if you have that clear run of lawn you are set.

The castle with ball pit balls is $469 and takes exactly the same space, because the balls sit inside. It is lovely for younger children and for parties with a mix of ages, since the little ones have somewhere gentle to be while the big kids bounce.

The castle with water slide is $499 and includes the splash pool. Same footprint again, but this is the one where the surface underneath matters most. Grass handles water beautifully. It drains, it stays soft, and the run off is not an issue. If your only flat area is concrete we will talk you through it honestly, because we would rather steer you to a dry jumping castle than have you disappointed on the day.

The Bouncy Bubble Igloo is $380 and is the small space hero at 4.5 by 3 metres. It is also the one we suggest for covered patios and indoor venues where the ceiling will not take 3.6 metres.

Every one of them is white, because that is all we hire. It photographs beautifully against a balloon garland, and if you want the full look our garlands are $99 and backdrops with plinths start at $350. Worth saying plainly: those figures are rough guide prices only. Your final price gets discussed when we give you a call or you get in contact, once we know your date, your suburb and what you actually want on the day.

Surfaces: grass is ideal, and plenty of other things work

Flat grass is our favourite. We peg into it, the anchoring is quick and solid, and it is the softest landing for the kids. Most Gold Coast backyards give us exactly that.

If you do not have grass, that is fine. Concrete, pavers, artificial turf, a driveway or a hall floor all work as long as they are flat. On hard surfaces we anchor with weights instead of pegs, which is the standard approach and just as secure. Nothing changes for you, and there is no extra charge.

A gentle slope is usually still workable. A noticeable slope is where we like to see a photo first, because we can often find a flatter corner of the yard you had not considered.

Once your jumping castle is up we anchor it properly and run a safety check before handing it over to you, every single time. The castles are also cleaned between every hire, so what arrives at your place is genuinely fresh.

Getting it in: gates, side paths and a few steps

The castles roll in on a trolley, so what we need is a clear path from where the van parks to where the castle goes. Roughly a metre of clear width does it, which is a standard side gate, and most homes have one.

Steps are not a problem in small numbers. A couple up to a back deck or down into a yard is completely normal for us. It is only a full staircase where we want a heads up.

Worth a quick look on the day: bins moved off the side path, the hose reel out of the way, and the dog somewhere happy. That is all the prep we ask for. Delivery, setup and pack down are always included, so you are not lifting anything.

If the only access to your backyard is through the house, tell us when you book. We have done it plenty of times and it is fine.

Power, and where we plug in

A jumping castle runs on a blower that stays on the whole time, so we need a standard power point within about 20 metres of the setup spot. Almost every home has one on an outside wall, in a garage or under a carport that reaches easily.

The one thing we ask is that the point is not shared with anything heavy running at the same time. A second fridge, a pool pump or a coffee machine on the same line can trip things at the worst moment. Keeping the blower on its own point avoids that entirely.

If your only power is a long way from the flat part of the yard, mention it. We carry leads and it is almost always solvable.

Gold Coast weather, and how we look after you

Living here means the sky occasionally has opinions, and we would rather be upfront about how we handle it than leave you guessing.

Light rain is genuinely fine. Our castles have covered roofs and the kids barely notice a shower. If heavy rain is coming, we call you on the morning of your party and talk it through. You can move the date at no cost, or take a refund. Moving your date is always free.

If there are storms or lightning about, we will not set up. That is a safety call, with a refund and no cancellation fee. The same goes for strong wind, because sustained wind above about 30 kilometres an hour is not safe to run an inflatable under Australian standards. We would always rather reschedule and give the kids a brilliant day next weekend.

A typical hire runs about four to six hours, so there is usually room to work around a passing shower rather than lose the day.
